Essential Oils for Breast Health

By Shelly Allen, CEOC, AADP

October is breast cancer awareness month, which is kind of interesting because I don’t think anyone reading this article isn’t aware of breast cancer. We all know someone who has gotten the call from the doctor’s office after a breast cancer test, “The doctor would like to see you…” From what I can ascertain, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the month to remind women to keep their breasts healthy by getting their recommended screenings. My intention during this month is help you understand how you can use essential oils to help support breast health.

So…What are Essential Oils?

According to Wikipedia, essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants, or the “blood” of the plant. Basically, all the effective compounds in the plants stems, roots, leaves or flowers are extracted in various ways, with steam distillation being the purest. These compounds are highly concentrated and their potential for supporting health has been studied widely.

Top oils for fighting breast cancer cells: Chamomile, thyme, cinnamon

In a 2010 study, researchers tested the healing properties of 10 of the most popular essential oils – mint, ginger, lemon, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, chamomile, thyme, rose and cinnamon – and found that jasmine, chamomile, thyme and cinnamon were significantly potent against Breast Cancer cell lines. Here we will focus on Chamomile and discuss cinnamon and thyme in a future article.

A quick search through pubmed unearths 14 published studies showing the potential positive effects of chamomile essential oils’ chemical compounds against breast cancer cells. The results of one 2017 in vitro study, indicated time- and dose-dependent anti-invasive and anti-migrative or proliferative and anti-toxic effects of hydroalcoholic extract of aerial parts of chamomile on human breast cancer MDA-MB-468 and MCF-7 cell lines. Researchers concluded that chamomile may be an effective plant in preventing and treating breast cancer.

What this means for you?

Chamomile essential oil is an oil you may want to add to your health supplement regimen. Along with anticancer potential, chamomile may also be helpful for restful sleep, stress, and digestive support. Chamomile may be diffused, used topically, or taken taken internally for generally healthy people. Roman Chamomile should not be used during pregnancy as it can cause uterine contractions and miscarriage.

As with any health supplement, quality is key. Many factors contribute to the quality of an essential oil and I can’t stress enough how important it is to use high quality essential oils. Make certain the oils you use are 100% pure, therapeutic grade and tested consistently by a third party for purity such as Young Living brand essential oils. Our next article talks about the King of essential oils, Frankincense and how daily use may support breast health. Go read it, now.
